RESOLUTION
Covenant Presbyterian Church Session
Responds to the Passage of California Proposition 8
by J S Fredericks
Clerk of Session
Los Angeles, CA – The Session of Covenant Presbyterian Church of Los Angeles met on November 19, 2008 at a Special Called Meeting to formulate a resolution that was presented from its Mission, Evangelism, Justice and Peace Committee. This resolution was in response to California’s passage of Proposition 8 placed before the voters on November 4, 2008.
The Session approved the following in support of the repeal of Proposition 8:
SESSION RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Session of Covenant Presbyterian Church recognizes that discrimination, injustice, and inequality have no place in the Church or in the California Constitution;
WHEREAS, the initiative, Proposition 8 passed by a 5 percent margin on the November 2008 ballot, adding discrimination, injustice, and inequality to the California Constitution and taking away the rights given by decision of the State’s Supreme Court* by restricting the definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman;
WHEREAS, The Session of Covenant Presbyterian Church supports families and the building of stable, empowering and respectful relationships;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Session of Covenant Presbyterian Church opposes the action and result of Proposition 8, seeking to revise the Constitution by initiative rather than an act of the legislature;
WE THEREFORE SUPPORT appeals being made to the California Supreme Court seeking to find the act unconstitutional and restore the rights originally recognized by the May 15, 2008 California Supreme Court Decision.
